Space Needle Celebrates SAM’s Grand Reopening |
![]() Dave Jungck, PNTA Event Services I would like to thank all of the wonderful people at the Space Needle for selecting PNTA to help celebrate such a wonderful cause. A number of other incredible buildings make up the beautiful Seattle skyline, and I want to color them all. If you are interested, you can reach me at PNTA Event Services, (206) 622-7850, Ext 122, or at davej@pnta.com regarding any questions you might have about lighting a building or any other event you have coming up. |
![]() PNTA Lights the Space Needle AgainPNTA recently enjoyed the privilege of once again coloring one of Washington’s most well-known architectural icons, the Space Needle, this time to promote the Grand Reopening of the downtown Seattle Art Museum. Our goal was to light the Space Needle blue and green to match the colors SAM used in its marketing materials. In achieving our goal, we had to address a few tall challenges—everything from the exterior conditions of a structure roughly 60 stories tall to the type of color filter used on the different types of existing fixtures that light this wonderful national landmark. Our first challenge was to determine the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) curve of the existing fixtures. This information was crucial for determining both the areas of the Space Needle that could be filtered either blue or green and the actual percentage of light transmission through the color filter. We decided that the metal halide fixtures would give us a great blue wash on the legs and underside of the saucer. We then determined that the florescent fixtures that illuminate the roof of the saucer would give a bright green light with the proper color filter. After a great deal of prep work to pre-cut the color filters to fit each light, roll them up and package them for a smooth and safe execution, it was time to install. We harnessed up and headed out onto the halo of the saucer, the outermost part just underneath the observation deck of the Space Needle. The cool part about this step was talking to people on the observation deck who weren’t expecting to see anyone working on the edge of the needle. Also, the views were incredible, both the 360-degree panorama of the city and Elliott Bay and the breath-grabbing view as we looked down past our toes at the ground almost 600 feet below. The installation went smoothly, and the desired effect looked stunning. |
