Space Needle Celebrates SAM’s Grand Reopening

Dave Jungck, PNTA Event Services

I would like to thank all of the wonderful people at the Space Needle for selecting PNTA to help celebrate such a wonderful cause. A number of other incredible buildings make up the beautiful Seattle skyline, and I want to color them all. If you are interested, you can reach me at PNTA Event Services, (206) 622-7850, Ext 122, or at davej@pnta.com regarding any questions you might have about lighting a building or any other event you have coming up.

PNTA Lights the Space Needle Again

PNTA recently enjoyed the privilege of once again coloring one of Washington’s most well-known architectural icons, the Space Needle, this time to promote the Grand Reopening of the downtown Seattle Art Museum. Our goal was to light the Space Needle blue and green to match the colors SAM used in its marketing materials. In achieving our goal, we had to address a few tall challenges—everything from the exterior conditions of a structure roughly 60 stories tall to the type of color filter used on the different types of existing fixtures that light this wonderful national landmark.

Our first challenge was to determine the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) curve of the existing fixtures. This information was crucial for determining both the areas of the Space Needle that could be filtered either blue or green and the actual percentage of light transmission through the color filter. We decided that the metal halide fixtures would give us a great blue wash on the legs and underside of the saucer. We then determined that the florescent fixtures that illuminate the roof of the saucer would give a bright green light with the proper color filter.

After a great deal of prep work to pre-cut the color filters to fit each light, roll them up and package them for a smooth and safe execution, it was time to install. We harnessed up and headed out onto the halo of the saucer, the outermost part just underneath the observation deck of the Space Needle. The cool part about this step was talking to people on the observation deck who weren’t expecting to see anyone working on the edge of the needle. Also, the views were incredible, both the 360-degree panorama of the city and Elliott Bay and the breath-grabbing view as we looked down past our toes at the ground almost 600 feet below.

The installation went smoothly, and the desired effect looked stunning.

School Gym-Theatre Receives Sound, Lighting and Drapery

Open Window School Project

Recently we wrapped up a full sound, lighting, and drapery project at Open Window School in Issaquah. The project upgraded their combined gym-theatre with a new sound system, intelligent lighting system for the stage, and full drapery design and installation.

The sound system includes two small line array speakers. The system is controlled by menu-driven wall controllers which allow for easy use by students. They also provide an invaluable learning experience for the students. Additionally, the system allows use of an infrared remote in the house to control and cue sources.

The new lighting system includes 4 ETC Smartbars, 16 lighting fixtures, and a Strand 200 series console. The new lighting system will allow students and faculty to enhance their assemblies and performances, including dance and theatre.

The drapes supplied to the Open Window School make their new, unfurnished stage functional for performances. Onstage black masking drapes are suspended from two tracks so they are moveable the full width of the stage. The proscenium opening features a grand drape and valance in classic deep red stage velour. The most interesting challenge of the space was that the proscenium is not framed into the traditional rectangle but is open all the way to the gabled roof. The solution was to cover the upper part of the opening with a flat, neutral-color drape that resembles a wall, but is less expensive than literally building a suspended wall.

We were able to work closely with the electrician on this project to make sure that the whole installed system including the electrical work fit within the customer’s established budget.
